Get Involved: Herman fellowship
WHAT IS IT?
This four-week fellowship is an opportunity for learning and living experiences of Christian community in an Episcopal summer camp context.
Fellows serve as lead cabin counselors during Special Session, a weeklong summer camp for adults with intellectual and physical disabilities staffed by teenage and young adult staff members, and as cabin counselors at Bethany's Kids, an inclusion summer camp for children of all abilities from 4th-8th grade.
WHY IS IT CALLED THE ‘HERMAN’ FELLOWSHIP?
The fellowship is named after Lynn Herman. Lynn Herman was a beloved leader in the Special Session community for 20 years. She was one of our “founding mothers.” Lynn was especially interested in engaging and supporting young people as they grew in their understanding of what it means to be compassionate, kind, and inclusive. The fellowship was named after Lynn to honor her memory and her gift for lifelong transformation. We hope that her spirit of kindness and humor will be felt by all participants.
General Requirements:
- Applicants must be high school graduates or above.
- All fellows must complete certifications in CPR and First Aid during staff training.
- All are strongly encouraged to get lifeguard certified prior to camp starting but it is not required. Camp McDowell will reimburse the cost of the certification course.
- All staff must complete, "Safeguarding God’s Children” - a sexual misconduct prevention training - during staff training. An online course is required of all hired staff, to be completed prior to training.
- Background checks will be conducted on all hired staff.
- Drug testing may be conducted at the discretion of Camp leaders.

Important Information:
- The dates of the Herman Fellowship are May 20th-June 7th 2025. Staff training begins May 20th.
- Applications are submitted through our registration system, campbrain.
- Interviews will be conducted via zoom/Google Meet during the month of February 2025.
WHO SHOULD APPLY?
Anyone with an interest in working in community with people of all physical and intellectual abilities. We think anyone considering a career in occupational therapy, social work, nursing, music or art therapy, outdoor recreation, mental health counseling, nonprofit work, religious vocation, or similar fields would be engaged by the content of the program.

During camp sessions, this fellowship does involve long days and some work outside in June in Alabama. You do not have to be a Christian to be a fellow; engagement with religious questions and practices is a component of the fellowship.
